we are not in, please leave a message

I like to write graffiti with crayons. Like Sesame Street or Lady Pink. But, for now, I'm stuck with box after box scattered with Gangsta Rap coloring books. And I apologize for the slow posts until moving in to New York is done.

common recording new album, out by september

Common, whose Be was not as out-there as Electric Circus, is already recording his next album with boy wonder Kanye West. The album, called Finding Forever, should be out by September, said Common. Which is bonkers when you think about how long it normally takes Lonnie Lynn to make a record. Says the man himself to MTV, "You will be happy with Finding Forever." "We're halfway done. We're going to be dropping in September, and the first single is going to be called 'The Glory.' I'm just excited. I want to scream it from the top of the mountaintop."
Calm down, Com.
And in other Kanye "Black Jesus" West news, he's producing Mikey Jackson's new comeback single as well as his new album, Graduation.
australians are turntables, say clouds

Silver headphones are wrapped around Australia. Not since I fell in love with Chilean techno (Matias Aguayo, Ricardo Villalobos, etc) or Montreal's indie rock (Arcade Fire, Sunset Rubdown, Islands) has geography made me so giddy. With bands like The DeathSet (who were nice enough to post my post about them) le paper dolls, toxic lipstick and others, Australia is certainly becoming the next place for weirdo music. But my latest wonderband are The Devastations. Slow, prickly melodies and well thought-out songs. Melbourne, here I come.

Parenthetical Girls have made a great record. Its called (((GRRRLS))). Like His Name is Alive but prettier. Produced by Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu, who has the best literary tastes of anyone in indie music. You know its true, Jamie.

Jane Jacobs, 89, has died

Urban theorist, philosopher of cities and brilliant thinker, Jane Jacobs passed away today in Toronto. Known for her groundbreaking book from 1961, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, still widely read today. Having influenced everyone from egghead DJ's to hipster academics, she'll be missed.

Meme is producing new groups and making songs for soundtracks and films. He's holed up in the studio.

The Friends of Manu Chao Band, otherwise known as Amadou and Mariam, are the Meg and Jack of Africa. Not that you need an American analogy, but analogies are our friends. With soft-voiced melodies and rubbery rhythms, Dimanche A Bamako, was one of the best records out last year. You wanted to know that.

punk academiks & teenage revolts

Punk waved to me. I was busy jamming tapes by NWA and Cypress Hill to dig up old Germs records or get brainy with punk's idealism. But, when I hit those ever-endearing teenage years, I snagged a copy of Mexican punk rock compilation that wasn't as boxed in and muscular as British or American punk. Bands from all over Latin-America didn't hesitate to use their mestizo selves to bring in their national folk, be it Mexican huasteca or Colombian cumbia. I felt a connection to Mexican punk, in particular a band called Tijuana No! that was led by the Mexican Jello Biafra, Luis Guereña. I picked up their Transgresores de La Ley. Musically, they weren't that white-hot, but it was Luis' lyricism with its classic anti-capitalist stuff, Zapatista samples, over crunchy rock--that kept me listening. LA Weekly writer and hardthinker Josh Kun wrote about Luis 's death, which went largely unnoticed by the broader pop culture press, outside of California. With the Arctic Monkeys now reflecting Britain's young people as feeling politically impotent, it seems even more important to feel connected to the idea of change. I forget how magical it is that that feeling existed when I was a teenager. But, what is so remarkable about Tijuana No! is that they didn't die off completely, but rather watched their member Julieta Venegas' pop career flourish. As Kun puts it in an LA Weekly article from 2000,"Venegas, who was born in Long Beach, raised in Tijuana and now lives in Mexico City, was studying cello at the time...but would soon go on to become a member of Chantaje, a punkish Tijuana band that would regroup as political traviesos Tijuana No!, the city’s best-known addition to the Latin rock circuit." Kun continues, "She co-wrote the band’s biggest hit to date, the ska-hop “Pobre de Ti,” before breaking away to go solo on 1997’s stunning Aqui." Lesson here is, pop can come out of punk, because though it may seem counter-intuitive, they are similar in meaning; reaching out to people, communicating something, and making them bump into each other with their bootys. Living in Austin, I always saw young kids in ripped black pants, mohawks hitting the ceiling, and I used to get giddy. But, I always wondered whether they knew how pop could be political. I like teenage revolts that make you dance, that don't just teach political anarchism, but rather how to talk to each other, like we all live in a Marvin Gaye song. And it may be 2006, but it seems the lessons I learned back in the early 90's, that I love being anti-nostalgia, anti-golden age with music are still valuable like Slick Rick's teeth.

I learned that pop music is political. And I know just from travelling to Mexico when growing up, that newsweeklies and music magazines make it hard to blur between pop and mohawk rock. That is a lesson not easy to learn.

emoticons are wack, new york times says

Beans- Crevice
I remember seeing Beans perform this for the first time on the film Slam. Years later, I heard this open-hearted song and still think, though the beat probably could be better, the lyrics are still as emotionally personal as Ghostface's "All That I Got is You". Beans has always been a strange dude to talk to. I remember interviewing him for Signal to Noise through e-mail and needless to say, they were short answers. Ended up being more of an academic essay cause homedudes answers were like "no" and "yes".
Chatterboxes, these rappers.

criticism, or how thugs need hugs

FRIENDS!
hearts go hard when beats grow old. like my dad told me when i was a little kid with guitar strings coming out of his nose; be strong. to everyone who has been with me from the get go, thank you. new bands, new rappers, new producers, new writers--these make earth warm and glowing fingers want to dance. art makes us live louder. young people with synthesizers in the streets. criticism is not here to make tears, but rather to make us want better. and we try our hardest, we do. elephant rock and Derrida (because names are always capitalized) rap proved to be not enough, what next? small french children and baby neptunes thumps. records should be these tiny things we take to our graves, that are like the last words we will ever utter spoken with last breaths and pink smiles. paintings that are drum machines. crayon indie pop. critique is like watching white noise fizzle. its all about the walter benjamins. grow beards. wear dresses. and don't think for a second i have forgotten about you young youth with afros and white sunglasses with television heart. colored sunshine breaking across brown skin. guitars like echoes and bullets and ringtone beep beep after you. I watched you grow. tomorrow bunnies over Israel (because countries have to be capitalized). see, there was no reason to put down those crayons and pick up those gray guns with their dry bodies. john peel was a saint, mom used to say. and i'd pick up the phone and hear morocco on the other end beatboxing and i'd laugh and laugh and laugh. buildings born of hums. we are inside these parenthesis, that was this dream once, and they were the size of Paris, not the rapper, but the city and then the rapper came out and started doing his SAT's then threw his pencil down and was all like, i don't need SAT's!!!!! and then i nodded my head gently, biting into an apple that was digitized, bytes biting back, because really who needs those question marks? pop like david bowie's cereal box with glitter spoons and stardust prizes. we only remember what leaves us, i once saw on a wall in berlin. mom used to cook some mean moon rice. sun ra bubble gum. toy records. don't forget literature with effects pedals vowels distorted analog nouns bounce. j dilla t-shirts and pajama pants.

longest name in history to ever do psychedelics band

With their Captain Beefheart on a diet vibe and 60's Brit Rock steez, this LA pysch-rock trio is still mysterious. Long hair does little to make a rock song great, but somehow these dudes did it. Sugary vocals, homoerotic lyricism and squiggly fonts: I am for real.

Those weirdos in Liars are back to break you off. Starting May 17th, watch out for nonstop hair flying, drum crushing, guitar ignoring, love loving. Galaxies will move like in a T.I. video and post-Berlin bubble pop will get destroyed in favor of forest rock.
You should, um, probably be there.

mam, there is no reason to use ear plugs

Masonna-Wear Your Love Like Heaven
Screamo expert Masonna makes a lot of hubub using effects, distortion, fuzzy static and his voice. Rumor has it that years ago, Beck heard who he was and got him to open his Japanese shows. But, you know, its not that bad. I'm sure this will be pop in a hundred years.

I like bands that are about momentary bliss. Like The Germs or Ol' Dirty Bastard. Future pop be damned, this Baltimore quartet is Erase Errata for the East Coast peoples. Nasty chords, lazy drums and lots of jumping around.

(by daniel ladel)
On MTV, Rakim and Nas confirmed that they are working together on a new record. "Me and Nas, we been talking about this for a long time. Our people around us been talking about it and the whole world [has been talking about it], but it's about time, man," Rakim said. Now, we sit and wait for a thousand years.
Thanks, guys.
colombian punks put down guitars, hug trees

Colombian punks turned hippies, Aterciopelados, are some of the most legendary figures of 90's Latin rock. With their catchy rhythms and wonderful blend of pop and Andrea Echeverri's elastic voice, I want to hug them forever and ever. Two songs from their excellent, La Pipa de la Paz record show how rootsy they can be, though their later works are chock-full of beats.

Jackson C. Frank- Blues Run the Game
Forget Jose Gonzalez's mopey acoustic songs, Jackson was waxing depressive back in the 1970's. Bad luck and down and out feelings followed this American folk star throughout his entire life until he passed away. "Blues Run the Game" is by far his best song. "Kimbie" is great, too.

never mind the drum machines

Simon Reynolds' excellent book on postpunk, Rip it Up and Start Again, highlights PiL in its first section. Johnny Rotten's beautifully wimpy synthetic self talked about the Pistols' first album and how it was shaped by Malcolm McLaren. Rotten, whose real name is Johnny Lydon, said that his vision of their classic Never Mind the Bollocks record would have been different. He said, his ideas would have rendered the album "unlistenable for most people." Are we talking about the inception of noise? Post-Luigi Russolo static? I can only imagine what Rotten had in his brain and can wonder if pop history would have been different if McLaren and the rest of the Sex Pistols would have let him have his way.
For now, I guess I'll just rip my black leather jeans and go outside.
Thanks, Malcolm.
jamie lidell to come out with new remix album

Hotstepper Jamie Lidell don't stop. When he's not touring with Beck, breaking synthesizers, wearing weird yellow outfits and being British, he's making music. Warp Records announced that Lidell:
"Has handpicked a collection of live versions and remixes of tracks from his album Multiply to form Multiply Additions, out next month. Highlights include new mixes from Mocky, Four Tet and Freeform Five, and a particularly dope remix from Luke Vibert. Multiply Additions will be available on CD in all it's full-length, 10 track glory alongside a 12" sampler carrying four choice dancefloor cuts.
Out on May 29th worldwide through all the usual avenues, with the exception of the CD in the UK which will be available exclusively from Warpmart."

dj jester almost quits music, reconsiders, marries turntables

San Antonio turntable wizard, DJ Jester, like most of us, was asking the big questions. Records, magazines, women, Willie Nelson, city after city, women, Kid Koala--is this all there is??
And he almost gave it all up.
Jester put it like this, "It was true. SXSW was going to be my last show EVER. Truth is, life on the road is hard as shit sometimes and I was in a situation. Last night, the weirdest thing happened in the middle of Oklahoma. It's one of those moments that kind of choked me up and absolutely made me realize that being Jester is who I am, it's what I do. So, here I am…in "G. Michael Pendon mode" all tired and exhausted from work, driving the Axe truck for 12 hours through Texas checking into the Hampton Inn just pass the Texas/Oklahoma border, I mean the middle of nowhere. So, the guy at the front desk is looking at me as I'm checking in and right away he looks so familiar. After checking my ID after I handed him my credit card, he says "Aren't you DJ JESTER?" with a nervous smile and chuckle . Let me tell you…I mean, that's happened once before in a Walgreen's parking lot in Houston with this dude that saw me play in New Zealand, but NEVER would I imagine that to happen in Arden, Oklahoma, with a hotel clerk… especially when I'm not even on a dj tour, just rolling through town for work in the friggin' promo truck. I instantly remember talking to him the last time I played Oklahoma City. I mean, it wasn't on some ego shit for me. If anything, I was so satisfied that this random person could be so excited and grateful for my music. Much like I was grateful for his gratitude. You just don't get rewards like that, or to that degree, when promoting body spray or shower gel. It's something I've been thinking a lot about lately….how friendship, community, love…all that shit is what really matters and sometimes it's all too easy to get distracted. I fell asleep last night happy that I can make others happy. I rested easy for the first time in a long while."
And get ready to get rocked by his new mix cd, Secret Love, coming in June. MP3's soon.
big business get new haircuts, time magazine in awe

Big Business ain't no joke. Two guitar-slanging white dudes who throw riffs around like bricks. Their record, HEAD FOR THE SHALLOW on Hydrahead Records is worth digging for.
winner of boring record of the month (even though it came out in march)

Thumbs down to boring ass 9th Wonder. Dude, are you a sampler? Do you just touch things and process them in your body and out comes a 70's soul loop? And enough with the plump, crunchy beats that sound all Fruity Loops.
But, I love Murs though. Thats why this hurts so much.
Boo.
nudge play guitars, kid606 likes

Portland's Nudge are a terrific three piece that use everything they can to bang on stuff. Their record last year for Kranky, Cached is brilliant. Put it like this:
"Nudge demonstrates a remarkable range and mixture of real time playing and electronic processing. Rhythms hint at dub reggae or African patterns while the accretion of electronic textures goes on above and below the melodies and beats. This interlocking of electronic and organic instrumental sounds is what sets Nudge aside from those who simply glue twee melodies onto drum machines and synth pads. Nudge enjoys their flirtations with genre, which makes Cached a genuine look at a band in 'play' mode (as opposed to po-faced 'work')."
But its their latest 12" on this great label called Community Library that has me stoked. I reviewed it for XLR8R a while back and forgot to mention it. Let them mention it:
"new release available featuring two exclusive tracks from an ensemble including auxillary members franz bucholtz [signaldrift] and howard gilam [front machine].
go to www.community-library.net and grab one before they're gone."

italians eat amplifiers, too saucy

XXL- (Pokey in Your) Gnocci
Oakland's Xiu Xiu and Torino, Italy's Larsen made a pretty good record last year. Jamie Stewart pillow vocals and asymmetrical guitars in bed. Under the name XXL, their debut record, Ciautistico! was a successful experiment. Morrissey posters and toy robots sold separately.
XXL- Distorted Duck
[80's rap is pink clouds]

Two words: Todd P. One-man wrecking show, promoter, party love juice bringer, yellow t-shirt wearer. I went to one of his shows in Austin (Celebration, Flosstradamus, etc) where Vice freak Gavin McGinness kept chugging beers and Kyp Malone was affably walking around. Turns out Todd P turns the party out.

Asif Mian made an eye-popping video of Aesop Rock popping up. Known to folks as Evaq, Asif is a brilliant music video director whose just made a short film called "Lazy" thats equally infectious. Showing on the new RES DVD and at future festivals (maybe?) as well as on Evaq's website.

They make people do this:

did you take my bunny costume???

Clipd Breaks are rad. Other people from Forced Exposure put it like this:
"Clipd Beaks is the P.M. Dawn of noise-rock. Recorded in late 2004, Preyers documents the anxiety of five boys growing into men in the last strange days of the American Empire. Each of the six songs offers a kaleidoscopic view into their collective mind, a sonic galaxy of claustrophobic psychedelia encompassing krautrock, Factory Records, This Heat, and acid-damaged raps about Abu Ghraib."

Brazilian trio Os Mutantes played post-colonial pop in the 1960's. Years later, after being solidified as greats on David Byrne's Luaka Bop label, they are setting out on small tour. speakers are screens, watch the software bump

Takagi Masakatsu is a video artist who makes speakers into screens. Journal For People (Carpark) is thirteen tracks of processed clicks that make rock kids feel nervous. Accompanied by an excellent DVD of his video work that is equally beautiful, everyday objects are morphed into s-k-k-k-ipping work. Quiet and disruptive.

houston rapper needs shine, get those pencils out

Houston rapper V-Zilla has been putting in work for years now. Shadowed by the trillion other rappers with thin dictionaries in H-Town, Zilla is his own man. Putting out his own records, linking up with Swedish producers and trying to break through is his steez. But, shine comes hard and he deserves a bit.
Scoop up his upcoming record or just scribble him down as a name to remember.

beck and jamie lidell tour!!!

Holy butternuts, Batman! Eye-popping tour has been confirmed. Warp Records puts it like this:
"Jamie recently played the closing night of the M3 Summit in Miami on alongside Coldcut, Hot Chip, lady Sovereign, The Juan Maclean, Vitalic and many others. The nearly unanimous reaction is that he emerged as the unequivocal highlight of the week as he played to a beach full of hands-in-the-air partygoers followed by a giddy post-set shout out from host and renowned beatboxer Killa Kella. Not that anyone who had seen him before would be suprised.
If you haven't caught his insane live show yet, this is an ideal opportunity.
We are also chuffed to announce that Jamie will support Beck on his US tour later this year. Keep it locked for more information as soon as dates are confirmed."

Jamie will also be playing Amerikkka on his own in April.

david byrne is probably really hispanic
professor rap!

Back in 1994, there wasn't anything more envelope-crushing than Organized Konfusion. Dynamic duo of Prince Po and Pharaohe Monche (wheeeerrreee are you?) made brainy rhymes the freshest thing since Cadillac lego's. Stress: THe Extinction Agenda didn't have all the beats there, but that was always OK's problem. Can't they just come back and have MF Doom, dalek, Autechre and Dr. Dre hit them up? Dream, kids.
Organized Konfusion-Stress
montreal rock makes canadians proud

Montreal is rock's new savior. Arcade Fire, Sunset Rubdown and Islands? Bet people just throw electric guitars on the street like others do paper bags. Former Unicorns guys turned psych-indie-pop bliss makers, Islands are both complicated and memorable. Return to the Sea is a terrific journey into music at the end of its rational wits. They even got two of the greatest rappers to hop on board in Subtitle and Busdriver. Rock history is wearing an ugly dress, books aren't loud enough, radios are black bombs and then theres that blank space. Maybe its just that Canadian niceness, but this album is one of the year's best, thus far.
Islands- Where There's A Will There's A Whalebone
And this next song makes young people believe.
Islands- Ones
mexican-american journalists considered rarity, take photos while you can

I never do this, but check out the latest issue of XLR8R and see me! Since I started doing the journalist hustle I've always wanted to be in that ittie-bittie Contributors section. Like a small piece of people's lives, you get a picture and a mini bio. Peachy, I say, just peachy.
And I also have a column in the back or something.
Blah blah blah.
soft circle soft circle soft circle

Former drummer for Black Dice and Lightning Bolt, Hisham Bharoocha is a one-man wrecking ball of music. Solo he goes under the name Soft Circle he plays drones to disorganized drumming. With Prefuse 73 and Tyondai Braxton they form a supergroup which there will be news about in the future. Perk those ears up and wait for the upcoming as yet untitled release from Hisham.
Coming soon to a Pitchfork screen near you.
syrupy melodies over oakland streets

Run_Return are a trio who make Anticon-esque beats and clacky melodies on children's keyboards (probably). Think cLOUDDEAD without emcees and the draining ambience with James Brown's drummer.
Speakers all shook.
gnarls barkley make history in england

Gnarls Barkley, the duo of Dangermouse and Cee-Lo have made music history in the UK. Digital downloads have shot them up the charts to have the #1 single in the country. This is the first time that has ever been accomplished. Their debut album together, St. Elsewhere, comes out here locally on May 3rd.
Wait for it, the record is going to be excellent.
lsd flows in japanese waters, everyone seeing purple

Acid Mothers Temple, one of the best live shows you could ever see, are touring the US again. They've been coming annually and it's been great. Mumbling bassists, Jimi Hendrix as a Japanese guitarist, ecstatic drumming, long freakouts and slow jams.
See one of the best performances ever, if they're coming through your neck of the woods.

rakim breaks silence, talks about failed dr. dre album

Rakim was supposed to record an album called Oh My God for Dr. Dre's Aftermath label back in 2003. Turned out they split because of creative differences. Three years later, Rakim finally talked to XXL about it all. Dre wanted Rakim to be street, to play to the marketers. Rakim wasn't going to do that.
"The artist that I am is the artist I want to remain. My integrity and my pride for my craft, hip-hop and the hood is something that I don’t want to play with. Dre, I respect him. He’s a smart cat, man. He knows what’s in the mainstream. But at the same time, picking the guns back up and talking about a lot of the dirt that I’ve been around and seen, I don’t think that’s a smart move for me right now. I respect the people that I been around. I respect the neighborhood too much. I don’t want to play myself short with that. The things that I’ve seen and the people that I’ve been around is real people. I respect them, and I’m not going to do nothing to put them out there."

new york, rock the casbah! rock the casbah!

Austin's white-hot DJ Mel is our own little treasure. Been dropping hits on dancefloors like clumsy drug dealers. His 'Rock the Casbah' event is always known to get people bananas. New York say hello because Mel will be in the city for a long stint. April 11th through the 16th he'll be taking over. Pencil yourself in. Check Mel's site for venues.

videos killed the weirdo rap star

Brooklyn DJ and rapper Crunc Tesla puts in work. As he tells it himself:
"Grandson of an African American Baptist preacher born in Jim Crow Mississippi, Dj Raedawn got “the Callin’” to rip stages since the age of 4. Besides being a seasoned DMC vet and mixtape maestro to many, he developed the Turntablist Transcription Methodology with his chums Ethan Imboden and Battlesounds' creator John Carluccio. This unique notation system for electronic/dj music has been developed into software, used in music courses around the world and has been featured by the likes of Time, CNN, Blackbook, XLR8R...yatayatayata. At Skratchcon 2000, Q-bert knighted him with the Dj Q-bert SkratchMaster Award from the Global Skratch foundation. Far from a scratch nerd, Raedawn’s assaulted stages and dancefloors from the legendary Apollo Theatre to the most dank techno til’ 10 in the morn’ coke den party in Berlin. Under the name Crunc Tesla, he has collaborated with artists such as Tes, dDamage, Airborn Audio and Angelbert Metoyer. Having opened for a wide spectrum of artists, from Stereolab to Dizzee Rascal to the mythical Red Alert, Raedawn's performances have defied genre and moved generations of audiences. The 26 year old ATLien has been hiding out in Brooklyn for the past five years."
gorillaz play apollo theater, cartoons ain't there

Damon Albarn's cartoons, made remotely interesting by Dangermouse, recently "played" at New York's famous ittie-bittie Apollo Theater.
Kelefah Sanneh, of The New York Times , described it as such:
"The concert began with an announcement. "It's always euphemistically called 'technical problems,' " Damon Albarn began, and he sounded truly glum. His giant video screen wasn't working. So the show would have to proceed without the benefit of cartoon apes. A big setback, especially for those unfathomable people who actually enjoy watching cartoon apes."
And, then:
"With Gorillaz, he has tackled perhaps his toughest challenge yet: few genres are as unfriendly to dabblers as hip-hop is. The project has been a surprise success. The first Gorillaz CD, titled after the band and made in collaboration with the producer Dan Nakamura (known as the Automator), included the pop hit "Clint Eastwood." The song was so popular that it earned an unlikely tribute: in his autobiography, "From Pieces to Weight: Once Upon a Time in Southside Queens," 50 Cent says that seeing the "Clint Eastwood" video inspired him to name his group G Unit, after Gorillaz."
Anywho, show was aiight, cartoons are neato.
kompakt bathes in turntables, take avant-garde showers
News from the Kompakt omniverse is that DJ Koze is coming out with a new remix album of his Kosi Comes Around album. Turning techno into minimal munchies, Koze is one of brighest stars on the German label.

And goth DJ Superpitcher is making his rounds across Europe for the months of April, May and June.

Anticon geeky experimentalist Why? has a new record out called Elephant Eyelash. Surrealist lyricism, ticky-tack drums and sometimes-rapping, Yoni Wolf brings the pop. Like his debut solo record its chock-full of sunshine melodies and indie ethos. He opens his tour April 11th with neato bands like The Islands and Silver Jews. Turn the party out.

sunset rubdown tours amerikkka

Montreal's Sunset Rubdown, the hold on to young ideas "favorite band right now", is going out on tour for the month of May. And they'll be playing New York the day before the day I was born. Yipeee! But, seriously. Shut Up I Am Dreaming (Absolutely Kosher) is a great album that comes out in May. I'll try to post some MP3's again as the release date gets closer. Sounding better than Wolf Parade, this band is penciled in for great things.

thom yorke yells at himself, writes song about it

Thom Yorke poked his head up on Radiohead's dead air space .
is it a quiet week for the NME by any chance?
SHOCK HORROR not much to say UMM SHOCK horror.
i remember now, tape recorders record what yu say .. which may be taken down and used as evidence against you at a later date.
who is thi s jerk shooting his mouth off?
misdirected. missquoted...distorted...out of context...
oh
it s me. i think. but im not sure.
HA ha ha ha oh :)
Thom
Are those lyrics??
No, wait. He's talking about another predictable interview in the horrific PR machine that is the NME about the music industry. The British Press must be bored. But, those probably are lyrics.

paris wears sneakers, throws party for itself

Chok Rock- Buzz
French producer drops pretty beats with Beastie Boys samples for Warp Records. This is off last year's EP, Big City Loser. Usually France makes me sleepy when it comes to hip-hop but Chok Rock is an exception. Hope you like it.
germans start growing out of laptops, pretty happy

Oval- Untitled 1
German verbose producer Oval made one great album under the moniker of So with a Japanese singer, Eri. His earlier work is nonstructural, dirty ambient drones. On his 2000 album for Thrill Jockey called Ovalprocess he took loops and processed them so it sounds like CD's skipping. Like Nobukazu Takemura, only less fun.
guitars are back in, say homeless men

Califone- Wingbone
You need to know that Califone make great music without electronic help. Not that acoustic music has some kind of rockist superiority, not at all, but feeling the timbres and grumpy notes hit by guitars is good sometimes. This song is off their excellent Heron King Blues album.
duran duran duran and jason forrest do brooklyn

Jason Forrest is a really nice dude who also makes music thats bananas. Under his Donna Summers moniker it was glossy disco and as himself, its, well, glossy disco. I talked to him and Duran Duran Duran, a very affable guy, as I was trying to catch a cab after the Tugerbeat6 afterparty at SXSW. Turns out Jason knows my friends in dalek. Small world, I guess.
Both these guys hit up Brooklyn last night at Northsix. Heard it was bonkers.
Check out their split 12" when you get a chance. No, do it now now now now.
you drum for the yeah yeah yeahs? you?

The Seconds are a nifty band made up of people from other nifty bands. You don't believe me, do you? Bio pages, people. Like Crass with a pretty singer, this trio sound like welding materials kissing welding materials. Kratitude is great for soft listening, romantic dinners in war-ridden zones, quiet drives in Laos or for family sing-alongs.
filastine takes over the globe, buys new nameplate for belt

18th century snobby German poet, Goethe, once wrote that 'if you want to have meaning in life, you must attach value to the world.' Filastine, who considers himself "a specialist in counter-hegemonic brown sound, world's only luddite laptopist, on a mission to jam their signal with my noise" has an excellent new album that does such thing called, Burn It thats out now in Europe, but will be out in Amerikkka soon. French rapping, dirty riddims and transnational booty shakers, DJ rupture's Soot Label has done it again. Very recommended.

Filastine will be touring Europe, so my readers across the pond, get those pencils out.

1989 fat sneakers and gold chains

Ghetto Boys- Do it Like It G.O.
Classic recording of early Geto Boys (when they spelled it with an extra "h" and "t"). Willie D is still one of the hardest rappers I've ever heard. Dude rapped like George Foreman, solid, strong and without remorse. Back when Scarface was known as Akshen (which sounds like an indie rap name!) and Bushwick, well, when he was Bushwick.
orange laptops for all the noise grrrrrrrrls

Kim Gordon/Ikue Mori/DJ Olive- Paperbag/Orange Laptop
Noise princess Kim Gordon, DNA lady Ikue Mori and stoner collage dude DJ Olive teamed up back in 2000 for this SYR release on Sonic Youth's label. I always liked the interplay between Olive's pitter-patter beats, Ikue Mori's percussive tomfoolery and Kim Gordon's tone-deaf voice. Both of these tracks are standouts on the album for their perfect balance of experimentation and tickly beauty.
Kim Gordon/Ikue Mori/DJ Olive- Stuck on Gum
atlanta is still the nasa of rap

T.I.- The King Back
Atlanta ego rap makes me go bananas. T.I. makes an album with a balance of Tupac pathos and UGK understudy gems on The King. Pimp C and Bun even show up on the homage cut below. I don't know about you but Bun still runs it for me, by far. And he likes grime likes those bearded kids, too.
T.I.- Front Back
And has anyone noticed that T.I.'s album cover sorta resembles Superpitcher's mix cd from last year?

brooklyn dj's school indie kids on rap

Mississippi-born and current Brooklyn resident DJ Ayres
schools people on the basics of Houston rap. Like most ambitious projects, its probably too much ego to take on a whole city, not giving shine to other Houston luminaries such as V-Zilla or longtime emcees K-Otix. But, for what it's still terrific. .
DJ Ayres is also one-third of the turntable trio, The Rub. Throwing everything imaginable into one giant mashed up soup, their new mix cd, It's the Motherfucking Remix Vol. 2 is a gem. Lighthearted original mixes of hardcore rap, it'll keep you feeling dizzy with warmness.

ghostface cooks fish like picasso!
New mixtape by Mick Boogie and Tapemasters, Inc. is bananas. Broiled Salmon is forty tracks of snippets and exclusive tracks. Snag a five dollar copy when it comes out April 4th. Can you ever get enough Ghostface?
trees are bits that we eat to beat imaginary robots

Nintendo rock is the neu thang. The Advantage are from California and are obsessed with 8-bit rock songs, literally. They cover classic Nintendo game songs like Mario 3 and Blast Master on their second album, Elf-Titled (5RC). Like walking through a Contra game, waiting for someone out there to press the magic code, listening to these guys is dreamy. Put down that book, eat too much sugar and listen to these dudes.
WHEN WE DIE THERE SHOULD BE A BIG "GAME OVER" THAT SCROLLS ACROSS THE SKY.
