nova.
within black walls, little things always tend to buzz.
dj jester is a nice guy. its weird when you find out someone actually reads your work. and likes it.
very odd.
SXSW was peculiar and fun. saw Clearlake give a solid in-store performance as their lead singer (a thom yorke-looking dude) sounded like chris martin of coldplay. this kid and his mates have a future, i tell you.
beer, Can's tago mago and scholarly amounts of foosball later i see TV on the Radio for a split second at this snooty wankfest. i see Slug of Atmosphere roam in. he was wearing a Charlie Chaplin hat. as im walking in, Murs is walking out. i say hello as does he.
4 dollar tecates do not go hard in the paint. saw Ozomatli and nostalgia-inducing mexican rock dudes, Plastilina Mosh give a great show. thumbs down to Ozo getting arrested. i saw that one and its a tragedy that should enfuriate people in to becoming more cautious of their local police's power.
on a lighter note, i finished Langston Hughes' autbiography, The Big Sea. a wonderful read, very educational and funny at times. also an easy one to read. he was a very, very clear writer. Joyce and Pynchon could have learned a thing or two from Hughes. now, im trying to finish 'the brothers karamazov'. something i should have done last semester. being a literature major is still gangsta.
books someone needs to read:
samuel r. delany's babel-17
saul bellow's herzog
reinaldo arenas' singing from the well
chris abani's graceland
carlos fuentes' la muerte de artemio cruz

let's get free.
a saul williams line that has always stuck with me: 'calamity makes cousins of us all'
a line from the NY Times article of a gentleman at a hospital after the horrendous occurrence in Spain: 'how can a human being do this?'
and another reason to lose hope: no nos olvidaremos.
with two friends in Madrid, this has been a day where tragedy has weighed heavy on the mind, fury run through my veins and a hopelessness that i just can't seem to shake.
going to go have some wine now...go hug someone....

Bloody Peasants.
if rap is/was the pedagogy of the oppressed, what then is indie-rock? i ask myself this as the multiculti kids are at it again: TV on the Radio is going the post-Tiger Woods route and coloring outside the box with both their skintones and their Pixies-esque tone poems.
and i picked up a copy of Good Times today, as i found my American Fiction class' snooty canonical whiteness inspiring enough to rebel and yank this classic TV series from the olden days. really, dude, the olden days. like, when i was listening to Kool Moe Dee tapes. but, this tv show interests me on a cold, Ivy League-level, where i want to write hundreds of papers on its grassroots Marxist sensibilities (say what?) and J.J.-as-ghetto-artist's relationship to contemporary rap dudes. moreover, it seemed to find joys in small places, where glimmers of hope came through sticking together as a family, no matter what kind of corner you painted yourself into.
keep ya head above water.
and to the East Coast heads: check out Mike Patton and Rahzel get freaky on a handful of dates with my homeskillet Still from dalek. "what the fuck do people from Winooski know about music?". indeed.
'im French! why do you think i have this outrageous accent, you silly King!'

Klangstas.
so, a sky washed with thin white clouds is interrupted by wires of words and rusty sleepy sludge that makes me scared with joy. headphones become an instrument for the most malignant beauty constructed of static-filled soliloquies. and im only on the first track. this shit is evil, son. but a good evil.
dig, folks, the new dalek vs. faust album is a dreamy assemblage. a philosophy book welded together with melody's metals.
get up on it.
and life gets better: at a local used bookstore/record store/hey-look-theres-that-Depeche Mode-cd-i-lost-years-ago store i found religion through vhs movies. while getting lost searching for nifty philosophy books such as the real Dutch trance of Kierkegaard and the old-old-old-school politics of Aristotle, a whole library of vhs films fell my way. in particular malcolm x, scarface (oh, me oh my, how many latin stereotypes can i deduce from this gem), animal house (for educational purposes only), monty python (nerdy white people classics from gilliam and co. that give me a comedic hard-on) and last but certainly not least: the shining. its a wonderful day in the neighborhood, muvvafuckas.
look up sometimes.
